AMD

AMDAMD stands for Age-related Macular Degeneration. As its name suggests, AMD mostly affects aged people and results in problem with central vision, which makes it difficult for them to read and write or even watch television. Age-related Macular Degeneration occurs in two forms, dry and wet. AMD mostly affects people who are in their fifties and sixties.

Symptoms and Causes

Smoking greatly increases the risk of Macular Degeneration. Vitamin deficiency is also known to affect eye functioning, often resulting in eye disorders, like AMD. Hereditary or genetic factors are also being increasingly seen as one of the causes of AMD.

Symptoms of the disorder may vary from one person to another. Some of the signs of AMD include:

  • Sudden change in vision
  • Distorted straight lines
  • Distorted eyesight
  • Difficulty in reading or writing
  • Not able to recognize faces

Treatment

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet to increase antioxidant level in the body, which protects against oxidation.

  • Vitamins A, C and E are very helpful to slow the progression of AMD. For people with an advanced stage of macular degeneration in one eye, vitamins may help in reducing the risk of vision loss in the other eye.
  • High amount of lutein and zeaxanthin antioxidants can help in managing Macular Degeneration.
