Memory Loss

Memory LossMemory loss is an umbrella term for different states of forgetfulness. You may forget things or not able to recall people or memories. Also known as amnesia, memory loss interferes with daily life. It may be in the form of loss of short-term memory or occasional forgetfulness. Memory loss may be age-related memory impairment, mid cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's or dementia.

Symptoms and Causes

Memory loss can be due to stress or depression, sleep deprivation, nutritional deficiency, head injury, heavy blood loss, ageing, alcohol or drug consumption, underactive or overactive thyroid gland and tuberculosis, HIV, syphilis and other infections that affect the brain.

Some of the common symptoms of memory loss include:

  • asking the same questions again and again
  • misplacing items
  • unable to recall common words when speaking
  • mixing words up
  • getting lost in familiar surroundings
  • unable to follow proper directions
  • undergoing sudden behavioural changes for no apparent reason

Treatment

A number of essential nutrients contribute to brain health. Consuming a diet rich in foods containing B vitamins and antioxidant can boost brain health and memory. B vitamins are essential for promoting brain health, as folic acid reduced amount of homocysteine in blood, which is a harmful toxic acid that may damage brain cells. Foods rich in B vitamins help in the production of red blood cells that carry oxygen to the brain to keep it in good health.
